MY JOURNEY

My Journey

I started out my career as a hairdresser and when I was just 19, I opened my first salon which later increased to two salons and a butchers shop that I rented out to my uncle.  I absolutely loved meeting new people and getting to be social all day, but after a few long term bouts of ill health, I was, unfortunately, having difficulty being on my feet all day.  So instead I decided to teach hairdressing which I did for a number of years.

Part of my role was the marketing and PR for the hairdressing and beauty therapy department. I decided I really loved this aspect of my job so I decided to retrain in marketing. I studied two evenings a week and I did all my Chartered Institute of Marketing qualifications. I then decided to pursue Marketing full time and I got a job in the marketing department of a Further Education College in Leeds. I quickly realised that marketing was my passion and before long I had worked my way up to being the Associate Director of the college.

I loved what I did, but I found the environment quite toxic at times and a colleague mentioned in passing that I should work for myself, and it was like a giant light bulb went off in my head. All of a sudden that was all I could think about and I literally handed my notice in the next day without having any plan for what I would do, I just knew I couldn’t be there any longer and it was time to branch out on my own!

For the first three years I worked from my dining room at home, building my brand and gaining new clients. Once I outgrew my dining room I got an office in a mill near my home. I remember looking around the big space on the morning I moved in thinking this is either going to be very lonely place or I need to have a team to work with me. When I took on my first member of staff it was a very exciting day. In 2016 we moved to larger premises at Croft Myl in Halifax which offered us a better working environment and more space to grow. As I write this we are still experiencing growth and welcoming new members to our team. Watch this space for further updates!

Lessons in life

You can’t look to someone else to make you feel fulfilled and happy, that comes from within

I am in control of me and how I react and act, happiness is a choice I make

Life passes so quickly that you need to grab every moment and live it to the fullest

Never save anything for best, for in this moment is perfection

Guilt is a luxury we can’t afford to experience, it’s a waste of time, embrace your actions, learn from it and move on

It is better to take action and be imperfect than to wait to be perfect and never take action

Entrepreneur

I would love to tell you that being an entrepreneur and business owner is easy but I don’t tell lies.

My journey in this arena started at age 19 and there have been some amazing highs and some pretty bad lows. However if we only ever experienced the highs we would have nothing to contrast against, and life would be pretty much on an even keel, and that for me, would be boring.

I love the Samuel Goldwyn quote ‘The harder I work, the luckier I get’. I often think that being in business is a bit like watching ducks swimming in a pond. To the outside world, you see the duck gliding across the water with apparently no effort happening. The reality, however, is much different, underneath the water away from what you can see from the outside, the duck is paddling for dear life.

Success is “Preparation meeting the moment of opportunity”

Oprah Winfrey

I believe that we are all where we are because it is where we are meant to be and that everything that happens in our life (even the bad stuff) is perfect because it makes us the person we are right now today.

Often, with hindsight, we realise that the toughest of times in our lives is where we learn and grow the most and the experiences we have had are not just for us, but they give us the opportunity to support, empathise and be of service to others. So no matter what is happening, my mantra inside is, “happiness is a choice I make”.

Giving Back

Giving Back

I like to spend some of my time supporting and trying to make a difference to others so I volunteer for Calderdale SmartMove and chair their Board of Trustees. SmartMove help homeless and vulnerably housed people into secure accommodation in Calderdale. Our staff and volunteers do an incredible job and make a real difference to many people’s lives.

I also sit on the board of Business 4 Calderdale who run a networking group in Halifax to share knowledge, expertise and experience in the Calderdale business Community. I sit on the regional committee for the Mid Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce and do my best to keep the lines of communication open between local businesses and the Chamber.

Over and above that, I also do my bit for fundraising and my most recent endeavour saw me catch 30 fish in the Anne Walker Memorial Fishing Match raising funds for Motor Neurone Disease Association in memory of my beautiful sister Anne.

Reading List

Reading List

I believe that we only ever experience business growth in direct correlation to our own personal growth so over the years I have read many books and to this day, continue to do so. Here are some of my favourites at the moment, not sure if I should admit this or not, but some of them I have read many, many times!

How I Raised Myself from Failure to Success in Selling by Frank Bettger
The Seat of the Soul by Gary Zukav
What I know to be true by Oprah Winfrey
Passion into Profit by Andy Harrington
How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carneigie
The Magic of Thinking Big by David J Schwartz
Dying to be me by Anita Moorjani
The Slight Edge by Jeff Olson
Men are from Mars Women are from Venus by John Gray
Why Men Lie & Women Cry by Allan & Barbara Pease
The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell
The EMyth Revisited by Michael Gerber

Richard Branson is someone who I really admire as he recognises that he doesn’t have all the skills to develop and grow his businesses. He recognises the importance of his team and he surrounds himself with people who have the skills he doesn’t.

He never gives up and finds ways to make things happen. I also really admire Nelson Mandela for the fact that despite being incarcerated for 27 years, he had the ability to see beyond his present situation and visualise a time when he was free.

So after years of working with thousands of small businesses I thought I could share some of the strategies for success that I have seen working time and time again.

My time as an author isn’t over yet, I am halfway through another book.
